STATEMENT FROM MARCH OF DIMES PRESIDENT AND CEO STACEY D. STEWART ON SENATE INTRODUCTION OF NEWBORN SCREENING SAVES LIVES REAUTHORIZATION ACT OF 2019

July 18, 2019

“Screening our country’s newborns for serious or life-threatening conditions is extremely important in preserving the health of thousands of babies each year. Newborn screening programs not only saves lives, but also saves money for both the health care system and the taxpayer by preventing severe and permanent disabilities because infants receive early treatment.

March of Dimes commends Senators Maggie Hassan (D-NH) and Cory Gardner (R-CO) for introducing the Newborn Screening Saves Lives Reauthorization Act of 2019 in the U.S. Senate today. We urge lawmakers to advance the bill as quickly as possible to renew these critical programs before they expire at the end of September.”
